Walking down the empty pavement, you gazed at the sky. The white glow of the stars illuminated your path somewhat, not that you were scared. Although your neighbourhood was rough you were used to it and as you’d taken several self-defence and martial arts classes you could take care of yourself.
You glanced up when you heard a grunt coming from an alley, not sure if it was a couple doing stuff, in which case you didn’t want to interrupt or if it was a mugging. Your eyes getting used to the darkness, you were able to discern several figures.
Which meant that it probably wasn’t a couple making out. You paused at the entrance, watching as the fight played out.
“Not so tough now are you? Eh, ‘hero’?” One of them jeered, roughly kicking another in the stomach. He slid to the floor, groaning. You inched closer to the four figures and bit your lip when two of them started advancing towards the smallest.
That did it for you. Taking a running leap, you smashed your foot into the closest one’s ribcage, bringing your elbow down sharply between his shoulder blades. The man fell on his face, a loud moan the only thing heard before he passed into the realms of unconsciousness.
Unfortunately you didn’t quite manage to avoid his friend’s lunging fist as it pounded its way towards your mouth, but you spinned with the force of it and kicked between his legs as hard as you could. He whimpered, then joined the other on the ground.
You wiped away the blood dripping from your lips and glanced at the two trembling forms. The smallest one stood no higher than your waist and was quivering, clutching a large white toy to his chest.
“You guys alright?” You asked as you held your hand out for the one on the floor. Grinning he took hold of it and you hauled him to his feet. “That was pretty awesome! Thanks for saving our butts!” He said, straightening up. He was way taller than the boy next to him.
“No problem.” You murmured, turning to go back to the road. “Hey!” The man grasped your arm, making you face him. “At least let me patch you up. It’s the least I can do.” He chuckled, rubbing his neck.
“Can...you do that?” You asked sceptically. He smiled at you. “Of course I can! After all I’m the hero!”
You stayed silent for a moment, then giggled. “Not back then you weren’t!” He pouted, looking at his shoes.
“Well how about this then?” He picked up the boy and set him on his shoulders. The boy immediately grabbed hold of his head, sending the glasses he was wearing skew iff. “You can be the hero and save us, and I’ll heal you up when you’re done! How does that sound?”
Shaking his hand, you beamed at him. “Sounds like a plan.”
